A Whoopie Cushion + Plastic Spiders = April Fool's Day

Ever wonder how April 1st became known as April Fool's Day? I guess i never gave it much thought, until recently. Looking up the history for Saint Patrick's day, then Easter, got me to wondering how did April Fools Day originate.

Now i always figured April Fools was more of a recent "holiday" if you will. I almost hate to call it a holiday, but i guess in odd ways we do celebrate it! lol If you call celebrating stringing plastic spiders in someone's closet, or slipping a whoopie cushion under someones chair.

It actually dates back to around 1582 in France and was originally called All Fool's Day with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (new year's week) to January 1. (who knew New Year's Day used to be in the spring??!)

But remember, there were no phones, or email, or faxes or anything back then so communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1. These people were labeled "fools" by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on "fool errands," sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke.

These so called pranks evolved over time and a custom of prank-playing continues on the first day of April. Eventually this tradition of sorts spread elsewhere like to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread to other countries, April Fool's Day has taken on an international flavor with each country celebrating the holiday in its own way.

The origins of the "Kick Me" sign can be traced back to the Scottish observance.

In England, jokes are played only in the morning. Fools are called 'gobs' or 'gobby' and the victim of a joke is called a 'noodle.' It was considered bad luck to play a practical joke on someone after noon.

In Portugal, April Fool's Day falls on the Sunday and Monday before lent. In this celebration, many people throw flour at their friends.

The Huli Festival is celebrated on March 31 in India. People play jokes on one another and smear colors on one another celebrating the arrival of Spring.

Of course leave it to Americans to turn this into more of a twisted day! I remember as a kid my brother and i always doing some kind of practical joke, if not on each other, definitly on our mom! Heck, my dad would even get in on it! Where else did you think i got the idea of stringing spiders in a closet from! lol

If anyone out there who reads this is from another country, i'd love to hear how you celebrate this odd kind of holiday.

Kiss Me I'm Irish!

Well in honor of Saint Patrick's Day and being that i am Irish, i thought i would share some interesting facts and tidbits about this holiday and Saint Patrick himself.
Now we all know Saint Patrick's Day is to honor the patron saint of Ireland, and that it lands on March 17th every year. But did you know that he was not born irish? Though he was a very integral part of the irish heritage. He was born around 390 A.D and was born in either Scotland or Roman England (its not for certain though). His real name was Maewyn Succat, though Patricius was his Romanicized name,he was later came to be familiar as Patrick.
He was sold into slavery as a boy to Ireland and spent many many years in captivity until he escaped. He later joined a monastery and became a bishop traveling the world but kept feeling called back to Ireland and with the Pope's blessings he returned to Ireland and spent some 20 years setting up monasteries, schools and churches, By the end of the 7th century he had become a legendary figure.
It's said that he used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity; which refers to the combination of Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Hence its strong association with his day and name.
But i think the more well know legend was that, Saint Patrick had put the curse of God on venomous snakes in Ireland. And he drove all the snakes into the sea where they drowned.
But did you know that the first reference of the Shamrock did not even happen til 1571 in regards to Saint Patrick's Day? It was used as badge to be worn on the lapel on the Saint's Feast Day. TheShamrock was used as an emblem by the Irish Volunteers in the era of Grattan's Parliament in the 1770's, before '98 and The Act of Union. So rebellious did the wearing of the Shamrock eventually appear, that in QueenVictoria's time Irish regiments were forbidden to display it. So today, on St. Patrick's Day, a member of the British Royal Family presents Shamrock to the Irish Guards regiment of the British Army.

So what about the Leprechaun you might ask? How did that come about... well the Leprechaun is actually an Irish Fairy! He is supposedly a small old man (around 2ft tall) often dressed like an old shoemaker with a cocked hat and leather apron. Of course over time, we think of him dressed more in green than an apron! So according to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and pass the time making shoes. Also, if you are to ever catch one, its said they possess a hidden pot of gold. The legend also says you supposedly can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. But if caught he's a tricky little devil and he can vanish at the blink of an eye and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.

The Blarney Stone is another symbol often thought of on this day. It is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney). The origins of the Blarney Stone's magical properties aren't clear, but one legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone while under the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly.
I hope you all werent too bored by all this, i myself kind of found it interesting to know where these symbols and legends came from. But i hope you all have a really fun, safe and Happy Saint Patrick's Day! And if you catch that tricky Leprechaun, don't let him out of your sight!!

Like Mother Like Daughter

One truly talented family i have come to know on etsy, one mother, one daughter, both with an amazing amount of talent! I am talking about Artbydonnarose and Bellacosaart. I think they have more talent in their little pinkies than i do in my whole body! They knit, they felt (donna does amazing needlefelting!) and they both are amazing painters with somewhat similar yet also very different styles!

Artbydonnarose whose shop offers a variety of paintins, watercolors, knitted items and her wonderful needlefelts, also has a 2nd shop dedicated to just her paintings called Crazypainter.

Like this beautiful Sunflower painting here. I have to say its one of my favorites!

Or this watercolor of Venician Glass Candy.

However i just discovered this morning one of her newest projects. This Needlefelted Sunrise, which i think is just gorgeous work! The time and effort put into a project like this is just amazing, the colors are so vivid and alive! I truly love this one!

But we cant forget about her daughter, Bella. She has done a wonderful mix of watercolors, jewelry, greeting cards, and painted spoons - seen here of a Red Lilly.

She takes wonderful photographs, that truly show off her talented work. I just love this necklace she made too, called Crimson Beauty.

But i would have to say my truly favorite piece of work she has painted is her Orange Lily. I just love how vibrant the colors are!

Be sure to check out both their shops, Artbydonnarose and Crazypainter and her daughter Bellacosaart on Etsy. They truly do high quality beautiful work! And they will give you nothing but the best!

Let Me Introduce You To My Little Tiger Friend

Ok Maybe not Little! lol I am talking about http://liquidsabre.etsy.com/ I call her Liquid, or Sabre, or by her alter ego she is tigger to me! One of the very first people on etsy that i ever met in the forums. She has been a great support for me! Helping me with so many aspects of etsy and tweaking my shop to make it better. But, that is not all, she has been a great friend! Many a hours have been spent chatting and having fun, sharing ideas, thoughts and just making each other laugh.

Her talent is endless. She makes the most beautiful Jewelry! In fact i just recieved this lovely bracelet from her. (It's the black one in the center. ) She even handmade the clasp! The picture here cannot even do it justice!

She designs all her pieces using wonderful bright colors. Most of her pieces are made with silver wire, which i admit i love! I have always been a silver person. This piece here is a prime example of her beautiful work with silver. It's called Snowflake Obsidian . Which i just love her titles, or rather names! She wire wrapped the beads to create this stunning bangle. Truly beautiful!

This is a gorgeous set she made, Black Onyx Watch Bracelet Set. It was handmade with Black Onyx, Freshwater Pearls and Sterling Silver. The watch face is Silver Plated Geneva. It has a very classy and elegant look and feel to it. Perfect for a night out, special occasion, or anytime you just want to wear something special.

Her Earrings are always beautiful i think! And she always keeps a nice variety in different price ranges. I have a few pairs of hers i just love! Some that are more fun, different, and great for daily wear, like this pair here, called Tear Drop Glass Earrings are so pretty, and will go with anything!

But she also makes much more elegant earrings like her Corsette Earrings. I love the name because it sooo fits how they look! As she puts it, "Looks like the turquoise is wearing a corsette. That was the first thought I had when these were finished. " She also handmade the ear wires!
What i think i love the most is that this is a wonderful person, she will give you nothing but the best in customer service! She makes unique and beautiful pieces. And i love how she puts it (from her shop announcement): "All the jewelry I make, Belongs to someone else, not me. The hard part is finding out who it belongs to. So ask yourself, Does this belong to me or someone I know? "
Please check her out! You won't be dissapointed! And if you see a big white tiger around in the forums, say hi! That's her!
Oh and referring back to her "alter ego" she just opened up a jewelry supply shop too - called http://sabrestash.etsy.com if you ever need supplies, look her up!
