Handmade Leap Year Contest

Are you ready for another fun filled crazy challenge? I know i am!!
We are joining two teams together this year, the Crazy Team (of course) and Team Sabre's Closet, for this contest!
It will be Leap Year themed. Since, after all, it is a Leap Year!
So what does this mean, you ask? Well anything that makes you think of leap year, could be leaping lizards, hopping bunnies, jumping frogs, the #29, the month of february. Basically anything that makes you think Leap Year! So just get creative with it and have fun!

♥ Here's how it will work:

   • Sign Up starts TODAY! and ends on Sunday, January 29th. ANYONE can sign up! You dont have to be on one of these teams to join, in fact you dont have to be on ETSY to join... Anyone can join in! The only requirement is that it be handmade by you!
   • You will have 1 month to make your item(s). (items must be new, not something already listed in your shop)
   • All entries are due by Monday, February 27th.
   • Voting will begin on Leap Day, Wednesday, February 29th and last til Sunday March 4th.

♥ You may enter as many items as you like and enter with any or all of your shops! The more the merrier!
   • Just be sure to send me either a link to your entries or a photo, so i can post it for voting.
   • Voting will be done on my blog : http://missknitsetsy.blogspot.com and on facebook.

My First Secret Santa Gift!

So i received 2 secret santa gifts! One from the Crazy Thread and one from Sabre's Closet SS.. I couldn't resist any longer, i had to open at least 1! i'm trying hard to save the other for christmas (but we'll see how long that lasts!)

So here's a quick foto of what i got! It was all blue themed! (which i love blue!!) A pair of fun blue shades, super fun blue nail polish, blue heart earrings, blue and white stud earrings, blue flower bobby pins and an amazing ring! I love it all!! My Secret Santa went above and beyond!! thank you!!! ♥♥♥

When did you start selling on etsy and what made you join?

I started selling in March of 2011, and I just wanted to share my designs more than at local craft fairs. I was excited at being able to pursue my passion of crafting while providing a little extra income for my family.

How did you come up with your shop name?

I did lots of brainstorming with family and friends and other business owners......I wanted something that had "spice" in it but also conveyed a sense of nature.

What is your favorite item you sell in your shop?

This changes day to day, but right now I'd have to say my topiaries are probably my favorite as each one is so unique from all the others.

What is something you'd buy on etsy if money was no issue?

Some of the amazing furniture that I've seen!!!

What do you think is the best part about selling/making handmade items?

Looking at a design and knowing that I made it and am responsible for all of it!!

What is your favorite material to work with?

I LOVE working with recycled materials and turning them into art by re-purposing them and decorating them with spices. I also love all of the spices I get to handle. My craft space smells soooo yummy!!

What one skill do you wish you were better at, or could do?

I would like to learn to crochet.

What is your favorite Snack?

Anything salty.

When did you start selling on etsy and what made you join?
Dec 10, 2009. My friend (araleling.etsy.com) recommended me. She is very successful in etsy now. I started off doing crafts using felt but I didn’t get any sales during the first 6 months. Which is when I was about to give up from doing crafts, my little housemates recommended me to do plush by using socks. So I just give it a try and there goes my first sale in etsy.

How did you come up with your shop name?
In the beginning, I share the shop with another friend, William, therefore I name the shop BNWCraft (Brian and William’s craft). But after 2 months, William still cannot come out with any craft item, at the same time I felt he is not interested to continue, so I decided to continue BNWCraft on my own. Then I rebrand BNWCraft as Brian and The Wonderland Craft. (sidenote: don't you love that name!!)

What is your favorite item you sell in your shop?
My new recycle team plush, Toothless Dragon and Lowly Worm.

What is something you'd buy on etsy if money was no issue?
First I will like to buy Gray Cable Knit Hat with Huge Pom Pom from MissKnits so that sometimes at night I can wear it because nowadays I keep my hair short. (sidenote: awww thank you!!! ♥)

2nd I will buy Chibi Transformer Optimus Prime look-alike Ornament/Keychain as my transformer collection Araleling.

3rd I want to buy Butter Cream Filled Chocolate Truffles Plain Butter Cream or Pick Any Of my Yummy Flavors because I like chocolate so much from Michellesthisandthat. (Sidenote: who wouldnt pick chocolate from her shop! yummmm!)

4nd I would like to have a unique and fashion Copper Heart Necklace from Paratu.
What do you think is the best part about selling/making handmade items?
Handmade have already became part of my hobby. Successfully selling handmade items makes me feel happy because the art and creation that is created by me is recognized by others.

What is your favorite material to work with?
Sock, felt and fabric.

What one skill do you wish you were better at, or could do?
I wish to improve my skills in taking photo of the item. This is because through item photo, I can convey the story that I am trying to bring out from each of the items.

Yep i said it! Plarn!!

Whats plarn you say?

It's 100% recycled yarn made out of plastic grocery bags ( you know the millions of them you have stashed at home cause you just dont know what to do with them? ) Well i decided to try my hand at it! This Eco-Challenge (see posts below) had me inspired! I already make a lot of upcycled items...

Like my tshirt neckwraps....

But i wanted to try something really different! So this is my first attempt!

I used a dark tan/natural color grocery bags and cut them in strips, and then tied them together to make the plarn. i then crocheted away til i had my end product!

I think it turned out pretty cool if i do say so myself! And, its surprisingly sturdy and thick! But completely recyclable and earth friendly! no more excess!!

My partner in crime (sweetnsourinflorida) and I have concocted a great idea for what we hope will be a successful contest. With everyone turning to ways to better the environment, we thought we would put our crafty friends to the test.

♥ The Objective:
To create something (must be handmade) that is either recycled, upcycled, eco-friendly, or considered “green”. 50 % of the materials you use in this product must be from recycled/upcycled items! (we understand things like glue and thread and such must be new).

♥ You will be voted based on these categories:
1.) Most Original
2.) Most likely to save the planet
3.) Most likely to buy/use

♥ You may enter as many items as you like!

♥ Voting will be opened to the public on my blog ( missknitsetsy.blogspot.com ). You will be responsible for helping to promote the contest and get voters in!

New Mascot!

So Have you all heard?? Missknits has a new Mascot!

Those of you that know me in and around the etsy forums, know i often use my M&MK avatar (since everyone calls me MK on there).... It's become kind of a signature for me! What can i say, a girl loves her chocolate! lol

So a great friend of mine on Etsy, BNWCraft did a trade with me! I made him a scarf and matching hat for his upcoming trip... and in turn he made me the most adorable plushies! I had only expected the one, but when i received the box - well... i think the pictures will explain better! :)

I just love them! I hope they like their new home!! They were quite tuckered out after their very long journey all the way from Malaysia! But they seem comfy cozy now!

I have a whole BNW plushie collection going! (i have two of his zebras too!! ) You all must check out his shop! His work incredibly professional and he has something everyone will love!

So i won this amazing prize from SunnyCrystals.etsy.com a bit ago, and this past weekend i got my prize in the mail!

I had no idea what i was getting (half the fun of winning!) but knowing it was coming from her shop, i knew it was gonna be amazing!!

And wow, is it amazing!

I had to take pics - but they dont do them justice!!!!

I heard about Etsy from a friend that sells vintage on Etsy (DoNotDestroy) and I decided to sign up because I loved the site and thought that it would be a good way to give online selling a try.

♥ What one piece of advice would you give a new seller?
The one piece of advice that I would give a new Etsy seller is not to get discouraged. Establishing your shop a getting into the swing of selling takes time, patience and a lot of hard work. Also, read as much as you can! You can get a lot of advice about selling from the wonderful Etsians in the forums. (i second this!! forums a great wealth of knowledge!)

♥ What is your favorite feature on Etsy?
I love the Treasury feature! It is so fun to see what others love on Etsy, and a fantastic way to find new shops!

♥ If money were no object, what on Etsy would you buy?
If money were not a factor what would I buy? The list is so long! Being a jewelry maker, I would love to be able to buy more handmade beads and findings. There are also many fantastic handmade jewelry displays...

♥ What one piece in your shop are you most proud of?
The piece in my shop that I am most proud of is probably this one...

Oh how fun that would be...I would start by going through all my favorites in both my shops and just start buying!!! Then I would just surf around and keep on buying! The post office would have to rent an 18 wheeler to deliver my packages!!!

I know etsy from one of my friend. She also is a seller in etsy. On the beginning, I am not serious on this business. I share the shop with another friend name William, therefore my shop call bnwcraft, Brian and William’s craft. But after 2 months my friend still cannot come out any craft item, and I felt he not really want this shop, so I feel he do want to continue, so I decide to continue bnwcraft by myself.♥What one piece of advice would you give a new etsy seller?
Try and wait. Try any new technique for doing craft. When the first I join Etsy, I just doing felt plush, but not any single sale. After 3 months, my housemates suggest me to make sock plush. So I learn it from website and get my first sale on the 6 months after I created my shop.

♥What feature do you like most about etsy?

Alchemy and Forum. Alchemy opens an opportunity for buyer to get what they want and for seller to get more sales. Forum is the place to share the experience and doing promotion, like in CRAZY BNR Thread.

♥Tell us about a favorite shop you have on here?

I took the most time to make the Dibo Dragon. It took me around 3days to finish it, and is the most big size that I have made.

♥ How did you hear about Etsy? and what made you sign up? I began making my products out of need for my overly sensitive skin. It then became a bit of an obsession and I couldn’t stop making them, and when overloaded with my own products, I gave them away to family and friends. Then I started hearing, “you should sell on Etsy”. I had no clue what this was, so when I finally decided to sell I looked into what Etsy was all about, and I thought it was pretty cool to have a place to sell without having to have a website.

♥ What feature do you like most about etsy?
I love using the Pounce feature when I am bored, I look for new and/or undiscovered shops and tweet their products. I remember waiting and wishing for that first sale, so I hope that has helped someone get a sale or a shop heart.

♥ Tell us about a favorite shop you have on here?
Pinkies Palace. I wanted handmade thank you cards for my orders and I found her through the Pounce feature and have been a loyal buyer from her since that first purchase. She makes fabulous thank you cards for me.

♥ If money were no object - what would you buy from etsy?
I am really starting to like the Steampunk Watch Part Jewelry… and this business card holder is adorable…

♥ What piece of yours are you most proud of?
My Sun Soap is my best creation to date. Made just for this contest, it was the first piece I tried to step out of my comfort zone and whoop it up and get creative…and I think it came out fabulous!!
♥ What one piece of advice would you give a new Etsy seller? Patience. I know that is so cliché, but it is hard to get noticed on Etsy. There are a lot of sellers, so you need to market yourself like crazy, and then just wait for people to find you, and hope they like your product enough to become a repeat customer and hopefully tell their friends.

Have you tried animoto yet? its a great tool to use to create short slideshows! i just tried it with a few of my newest cowls and scarves. Thought it was fun and turned out cute! It's super super user friendly too!! The only downside is if you just use the basic/free account you are limited to 30 seconds... But still love it!

Longing for Spring

My dad, or as i call him dadddioooo (and yes i really do! lol), sent me these lovely flowers for valentines day.

A week later and they are still just as beautiful! (which is rare for cut flowers!) So took a few photos to share!

I love love love daisies! They are my favorite! The bright white, the rich red, the subtle pink flowers make me long for Spring!

Especially during a weekend when my dad was supposed to come into town to visit, but alas, had to postpone because, yes, again, more bad winter weather.

But, i know he will get to come soon! So until then, i will knit and crochet and admire my pretty flowers!

A Yellow Rose Means.....

So i thought i would spend today sharing a few of my favorites while sharing the history behind some of our famous valentine's day symbols! I found it all rather fascinating.. maybe you will too!

It is believed that Valentines originated from the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalis, sometimes called Lupercalia. The feast celebration was held through February 13 till 15. In an annual rite of fertility, eligible young men and women would be paired as couples through a town lottery. Briefly clad or naked men would then run through the town carrying the skins of newly sacrificed goats dipped in blood. The women of the town would present themselves to be gently slapped by the strips and marked by the blood to improve their chances of conceiving in the coming year.

Later, when Christianity dominated Europe, pagan holidays such as Lupercalia were renamed after early Christian Martyrs. In 496, February 14 was officially declared to be feast day of two Roman martyrs, both called Saint Valentine, by Pope Gelsius. Surprisingly, neither Saint Valentine had any connection to courtship or lovers.

Despite the constant attempts of the Christian church to sanctify the holiday, the association of Valentine's Day with love and romance continued through the Middle Ages. In France and England it was believed that the birds mated on February 14, then the birds symbolized love on drawings and poems written. By 18th century, it became a custom that on this particular day, lovers exchange love notes and poems. By the 19th and 20th century, lovers started to exchange greeting cards and fancy lunch and dinner invitations.

Nowadays, Valentine's Day is celebrated through sending cards and short poems as email and short cell phone messages.

Legend behind Valentine's Day Roses

There is an interesting story behind the legend of Valentine's Day Rose. It is said that once a beautiful maiden by the name of Rodanthe was pursued by a number of impassioned suitors. In their desperate pursuit the lovers broke the doors of Rodanthe's house. This enraged goddess Dianna. She turned Rodanthe into a flower and her suitors into thorns.

An interesting point to notice is that if the letters of the word ‘rose' are rearranged, it comes out to Eros - the God of Love.

Red roses are also considered to be a symbol of love and passion and the favorite flower of Venus - the Goddess of Love.

Rose flower is found in different colors and it is fascinating to note that each of these different Rose colors have been assigned different meanings by the society. Hence one needs to be careful while presenting rose to someone.

Origin of Valentine's Day Hearts

Around 12th Century people were not aware the function of heart was to circulate blood inside the human body. What they knew was that heart begins to beat faster when a person is upset or excited. They, therefore, derived that heart was the seat of emotions and feelings. Poets too eulogized the role of heart in feelings of love and romance and over the years this make believe connection between heart and love became deep seated in the minds of people. Today, even though it has been scientifically proved that emotions come from the brain heart remains a powerful symbol of love and Valentine's Day.

Cupid

The symbol traces its origin from the Roman mythology where Cupid has been described as the son of Venus - the Goddess of Love. It is believed that Cupid had a bow with a quiver of arrows and anyone hit by Cupid's arrow did not die but fell in love. According to a myth, it was Cupid's mother Venus who used to send him on such errands.

About Lovebirds It is said that blue colored lovebirds got their names because they sit closely to each other just like people who are in love do. People say that lovebirds can't think of their lives without their mates. Besides, lovebirds are known to keeping in pairs and keeping to themselves just as the young lovers want to live in privacy. Nowadays, lovebirds that are depicted on Valentine's Day are tiny parrots in bright colors. This is because lovebirds are genetically from parrot family.

About Doves

A special characteristic of doves and pigeons is their extreme loyalty to their mates. Unlike most other animals that go from partner to partner, doves remain with one partner all through their life. This is why, doves are recognized as a symbol of love and loyalty on Valentine's Day. According to a myth, Roman Goddess Venus considered dove as sacred because of its fidelity towards mate. Cooing sound made by birds is linked to “love sound” attributed to lovers. For this reason, when lovers talk in flowery and sugary language to each other they are said to be 'cooing'.

Love Knots

Valentine's Day symbol of Love Knots traces its origin to early Arab traditions. Young Muslim women living in strict orthodox households used to express love to young men through secret messages woven through the knots of a carpet. Lovers read the messages by turning the knot around and around. The tradition of sending messages through the knots gave birth to the concept of love knots that exist even to this day. Some people believe the custom of love knots began with the sailors several years ago. This is because sailors were skilled at making fishnets and so making intricate knots was their forte.

Valentines Day Lace

Laces and ribbons are a delicate Valentine's Day symbol. Their association with love and romance can be traced to ancient times. At that time when kings and knights went to battles their ladylove presented laces to them. There is yet another reason attributed to popularity of Laces as Valentine's Day symbol. Hundreds of years ago ladies used to carry lace handkerchief. If at times a lady accidentally dropped her hanky, courtesy demanded that the man standing near the lady pick up the handkerchief for her. Sometimes, ladies used to drop their handkerchiefs deliberately in front of the man they liked and wanted to meet. Lace therefore became a tool in the hands of ladies to encourage romance. Gradually, people began to associate lace with romance and started using paper lace to decorate chocolate boxes and Valentine cards. Even in present times laces are used in Valentine's Day Decoration and Cards.

Meet Babs!!

She's just a tiny bunny ready to share her love with someone special! She loves to tell jokes and is often mistaken for her famous brother Bugs! But she never causes as much chaos as he does! She loves to watch cartoons... though occasionally i catch her watching Oprah! But, she never admits to it...

She loves to snack on carrot chips and her favorite is carrot cake of course! But funny enough, she cant stand carrot juice! So don't even try giving it to her!

She is hand needle felted with care. Her body is gray, with a white tummy and cushy white bunny tail. Her body is soft and bendable. She is about 5 inches tall standing, or 3 inches sitting.

She comes with a tiny red felted heart, ready to share with her new friend.

Frozen in Time

I just wanted to share a pic from Christmas day. We were lucky to actually get a white Christmas this year! The snow fell fast and was beautiful! It didn't last long, or amount to a lot, but all in all it was the icing on the cake to a wonderful day!

My mom, who happened to stay in her PJ's all day long! lol out in the snow! Loved this pic and had to share! (but shhhhh don't tell her! lol)
